pexels-photo-210661-210661.jpgThomas Hottle was recently responsible for re-edits on a project originally released a decade ago, when it earned Book of the Year from Suspense Magazine.  I anticipated a minor polishing for what had already been a highly successful novel.  Instead, Thomas worked through the story with an astonishingly keen eye.  He introduced several concepts which were vital in bringing the novel up to date, and caught seven key elements that had been missed both by me and my earlier line editor.  I cannot recommend Thomas highly enough.  His work and vision are absolutely top quality.” – Thomas Locke, author Striking Distance

Your story is perfect, or as good as you can make it. But you want to make sure the prose sings.

That’s where copy editing and line editing come in. Though there are differences between the two terms, they tend to get used interchangeably. And for good reason. They’re often done together.

Copy editing and line editing goes through your prose and looks for consistency, repeated words, overused words.

pexels-photo-3178818-3178818.jpgFor our service, we simply say copy edit, which involves the following:

  • Crutch word check
  • General punctuation
  • Repeated or overused words
  • Extraneous phrases, like spending too much time on the character grabbing their car keys.
  • Name consistency. Is she Tania on page 5 but Tanya on page 45? Or Steve without some sort of medical procedure?
  • Run-on sentences

Our basis is the Chicago Manual of Style, but that’s not the end of the story. We also take your prose style into account. For that, we look for consistency.
